Although many may not realize it, transportation and the economy go hand-in-hand. Our roads and bridges play a vital role in Michigan’s economic well-being, as transportation is responsible for creating jobs, generating income, and bringing in tax dollars for government services. For example:

• Road projects in Michigan mean more jobs and a stronger Michigan economy. 42,000 jobs are created for every $1 billion spent on public infrastructure.

• This same $1 billion investment generates $2 billion in family income, $540 million in federal income tax and Social Security tax, and more than $60 million in state and local tax revenues.

• Results of a private study have shown that every $1 invested in public infrastructure and maintenance yields $6 in economic productivity.

• U.S. businesses realized production cost savings averaging 23.4 cents a year for each dollar invested in major, non-local roads. That means highway investments paid for themselves in little more than four years through increased productivity.

• The persistent under-funding of Michigan’s transportation system jeopardizes economic growth and limits job creation in sectors such as agriculture, tourism and manufacturing that are heavily reliant on quality roads, bridges and transportation infrastructure.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
