ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Legislature voted Monday to raise the state gas tax by a nickel as lawmakers prepared to confront Gov. Tim Pawlenty over spending on roads.

The transportation funding package passed the House 90-43 and the Senate 47-17 — putting the DFL-led Legislature on a collision course with the GOP governor who has threatened to veto the bill.

The bill got exactly the number of House votes needed to override a veto, and two more than the margin required in the Senate, where four Republicans helped 43 Democrats pass the bill.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
