If you are a little leery about going over a bridge, Monroe County may not be the best place in Michigan to be driving right now.

According to the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA), more than two dozen bridges on state or federal routes in the county are either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Dozens more on county and local roads have been closed or have reduced weight limits, including a handful in the past few weeks.

Why?

"They're old," said Steve Bouws, an engineer with the Monroe County Road Commission. "We've got an awful lot of bridges and culverts that were built before 1965. They are coming to the end of their useful life. Some are lasting a little longer than others."

And, like anything else at the road commission, officials say there is not enough money to fix them all.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
