A coalition working to secure more funding to fix Michigan’s roads and bridges debuted a new, humorous YouTube video today, pointing out the negative impact of our deteriorating roads on Michigan’s second largest industry. tourism.

“Our Great Lakes, lush forests and sandy beaches may be a tourist's dream, but when the road to get there is a transportation wasteland, it’s hard to enjoy everything Michigan has to offer,” said Mike Nystrom, vice president of government and public relations for the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) and co-chair of the Michigan Transportation Team (MTT). “After experiencing the “bounce-effect” of Michigan’s crumbling roads, tourists may think twice about coming back to Michigan.”

DriveMI’s “FixMiRoads” YouTube channel features videos designed to encourage taxpayer involvement and urge lawmakers to increase funding for Michigan’s deteriorating infrastructure. The newest YouTube video, available at http://www.youtube.com/user/FixMIRoads, shows a traveler crossing over the Michigan border and experiencing a bumpy introduction to Michigan roads. The YouTube video is part of an ongoing effort to raise policymaker’s understanding that the condition of Michigan’s roads and bridges poses a serious threat to public safety and imposes a roadblock to business development and tourism in the state.

Tourism is Michigan's second largest industry and contributes more than $2.4 billion annually to the state. The economy, however, is not the only thing causing a decline in tourism. “Michigan has a lot to offer, but the state of Michigan’s roads is definitely not helping our tourism economy which creates and supports thousands of jobs and supports many local communities,” Nystrom said. “If vacationers wanted a roller coaster ride, they’d go to Cedar Point.

“Our roads affect tourism and every facet of our economy; we simply cannot afford to continue ignoring this problem,” Nystrom said. “We need our legislators to take action immediately and Fix Michigan Roads!”
