Voters head to the polls in a little more than two weeks. In Charlotte, voters are being asked to approve a three-million dollar road millage. City officials say the money is desperately needed. It isn't exactly smooth sailing as you drive through Charlotte. Many residential streets are littered with cracks, bumps and potholes. It's something city officials want to change.

Amy Schoonover, Director of Public Works: "My hope is to extend road life so we don't have complete deterioration all over town."

Amy Schoonover is the Director of Public Works. She says the roads are in awful shape.

Amy Schoonover: "Roads are not cheap, but it can make or break a town."

The city is asking voters to approve a 3 million dollar millage to finance road repairs. The millage will last ten years.

Amy Schoonover: "What we'd like to do is just have a treatment on the roads."

That means the money won't be used to dig up and repave the roads, it will be used to literally patch up the potholes.

Amy Schoonover: "It's like shingling your house, you've always got to keep reshingling your house."

One out of every five roads in Charlotte was rated in poor condition. That according to a government study done three years ago. As you look out on some of the roads, you really get a sense for how bumpy and uneven the surfaces area.

Judi Baum, Charlotte: "Driving over the potholes is pretty bad; you're worried about it hitting your tires."

City officials hope the millage will help change that impression. Charlotte's city treasurer says if your home is valued at $100,000, the millage would mean you would pay an extra $77 in taxes each year.

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
