New fears about Michigan's roads- will funding problems steer us toward big problems? A warning from transportation leaders when it comes to fixing our crumbling infrastructure- there's just not enough money to get the job done. They say the funds are drying up faster than ever. Orange barrels- if you've ever hoped they'd just disappear, be careful what you wish for, because it just might happen.

Kirk Steudle, State Transportation Director: "Our ability to maintain the quality of the roadway system in good shape is going to be hampered in the future."

State Transportation Director Kirk Steudle says the money to fix our roads is drying up.

Kirk Steudle: "Next year's construction budget will be about 300 million dollars less than this year."

And that's just at the state level, which makes up about 10% of our roads and bridges. Factor in all of the county and local projects and the funding gap gets much, much bigger. Transportation expert Mike Nystrom says the problem starts at the pump because the gas tax fuels our road repair budget.

Mike Nystrom, MI-ITA: "The price of gas goes up, drivers conserve a little bit more, and we see fewer revenues coming in."

To make matters worse, some state transportation bonds just expired, which Nystrom says creates a recipe for major hazards up ahead.

Mike Nystrom: "We have a 50-year-old system here in our state, that with age, continues to need more and more upkeep, and yet the amount of revenues are declining."

And without a plan to replace that money, for now it's drive at your own risk.

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
