Many ancient maps bore the warning "Danger, here there be dragons."

Soon Michigan motorists will have access to a statewide map that warns "Danger, here there are potholes."

The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association — which represents about 600 companies in the construction trades — has launched a website to let the public report, and hopefully avoid, potholes.

The site, at www.drivemi.org, allows motorists to submit pothole locations, photos and comments which are then posted on a statewide map.

"Yay, it's a great idea," said Diane Studzinski of Allen Park.

"I'd certainly use it, but not while driving: use it before you start the car. Every little bit of information helps, especially when it comes to potholes."

MITA will also send the information to state and local road agencies, said Mike Nystrom, executive vice president of the association.

"Driving on pothole-riddled roads costs each Michigan motorist an average of $370 a year, and the average pothole repair can run even higher," Nystrom said.

"And you can't put a price tag on the frustration some of these potholes can cause."

Sign the Petition

The Michigan Transportation Team (MTT) recently announced an online petition drive for citizens who are tired of driving on pothole-riddled streets. Although the petition is non-binding and will not change the law, the names of petition signers will be presented to state policymakers to demonstrate the level of support in Michigan for investing in our state’s infrastructure.
